Giant ship blocks Suez Canal in Egypt

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

What is the Suez Canal?

The Suez Canal is an artificial waterway in Egypt. It is 163 km long and connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea. It is the shortest sea link between Asia and Europe.

The Suez Canal is one of the world’s busiest sea trade routes. About 50 ships per day pass along the canal.

Recently, a giant container ship has gotten stuck across it, blocking the movement of all other ships. This ship is the length of four football pitches!

The stuck ship is called Ever Given. It was going to the city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands from China. But due to strong winds, it got stuck sideways in the Suez Canal. Now, people are working to move it.

The blockage has stopped the movement of more than 200 ships carrying important goods like oil. It has highly increased oil prices around the world.

The owner of the ship has apologised for the problem. The ship has 25 crew members on board, all Indian people. They are believed to be safe and doing okay.
