Good Friday: A Holy Day for Christians

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Good Friday is a Christian holy day to honour Jesus Christ.

Who was Jesus Christ?

Jesus Christ was a preacher who spread the word of God in the cities of Israel. Christians consider him as the Son of God.

How do Christians observe this day?

On Good Friday, Christians around the world spend time in prayers, remembering the death of Jesus on the Cross.  As written in the Holy Bible (Christian holy book), Jesus was cheated by Judas, his follower.

He was then captured and sentenced to death on the cross by the Roman governor of Judea. Jesus was nailed to the cross at a place called Calvary, where he died.

The most important Good Friday symbol is the cross on which Jesus died. The word ”good” in ‘Good Friday’ stands for holy. Jesus’ death is a symbol of forgiveness for all of mankind’s sins.

On Easter, the Sunday after Good Friday, Christians celebrate their faith that Jesus rose from the dead.

Moreover, some Christians also fast for six weeks before Good Friday which ends on Easter.

In many parts of the world, Good Friday is a declared public holiday.

Here is a video on Good Friday and Easter.
