Walrus from Space

A walrus is a large sea animal with flippers and tusks. Walruses are usually found in the Arctic Ocean. Scientists consider them to be a keystone species in the polar region.

What is a keystone species?

A keystone species is an organism which has a large effect on its natural environment. This means, without it, the ecosystem (environment) would be extremely different or sometimes, even disappear.

As a keystone species, it is very important to keep a check on the population of walruses. So, scientists have come up with a new project that plans to count them from space!

Walrus from Space

This is a WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) project and it is called “Walrus From Space“. WWF is running it with the British Antarctic Survey (BSA). BSA has been using satellites to count penguins, seals and whales in the Antarctic.

Now, what they will do is use satellites to captures images of areas where walruses live. Then, they are looking for volunteers who can look through the images online to spot the walruses. For now, they are counting the walruses that roam in the Atlantic.

Walruses need sea ice a lot – to live and raise their young. But due to global warming, sea ice has been melting at a fast pace. This is a danger to the animals’ existence. So, scientists need to exactly understand how climate change will affect them.
