Hiroshima day is observed on 6 August and Nagasaki day on 9 August every year. These days are not meant to be celebrations but are days of remembrance.

Key facts about Hiroshima day and Nagasaki day!

  • In 1945, during World War II, the US dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima in Japan on 6 August. Three days later, another bomb was dropped on 9 August in Nagasaki, Japan. 
  • Over 200,000 people died and thousands were injured in this attack.
  • As it was a nuclear weapon, even after years of the attack, people suffered from different diseases caused by harmful radiation.
  • This was the first and only time a nuclear weapon was used. It brought an end to World War II. 

 

How do people remember this day?

  • Japan has events that create awareness about the event. They include the ringing of the peace bell, readings, prayers, and a period of silence. 
  • People also gather at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in Japan to remember the first atomic attack.
