What is Global Positioning System (GPS)?

When you are in a strange place, what do you rely on to find your way? Maps. Google Maps has become an important tool in our lives. And Google Maps work because of GPS.

GPS is a global navigation satellite system (GNSS). Using this, anyone can always obtain information regarding exactly where they are, anywhere in the world.

Global Positioning System (GPS) is owned by the United States government and operated by the United States Space Force. While there are other GNSS systems like China’s BeiDou, GPS is the most commonly-used one.

How does it work?

Global Positioning System (GPS) is a system made up of three parts: satellites, ground stations, and receivers.

The satellites (about 30 or so) are always sending out signals from a fixed orbit in space.

These signals are received by us on a device, for example, a phone. As the phone receives signals from three or four Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, taking in the time difference between when the signals are sent and received, the exact position is calculated.

Ground stations monitor, control and maintain the satellites and ensure that they are in their orbits.
