Hydrogen Sulphide might help in HIV treatment

Last month we published an article where a Woman’s own immune system cures her of HIV.

In a recent development, researchers in Bengaluru have found that Hydrogen Sulphide (HS) might help us in our fight against HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Syndrome).

What HIV means?

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body's immune system to fight medical problems.

What is hydrogen sulphide?

A colourless poisonous gas with a smell of bad eggs.

Current HIV Treatment

At present, there is no 100% cure for HIV. The current treatment involves suppressing the virus as against curing the person. This method might have serious side effects on the patient. These could be organ failure, inflammation, increased level of tiredness. Above all, in spite of a patient taking medicines on time, the existent treatment might fail.

How Hydrogen Sulphide can help in HIV treatment?

Researchers in Bengaluru have found that Hydrogen Sulphide reduces the rate of HIV virus multiplication in the infected cells. In this treatment, a chemical agent can be released into the body. This can slow the HIV increase primarily by releasing Hydrogen Sulphide in the body.

The research although at an early stage shows a lot of promise. Researchers hope to utilise this new method along with existing treatment to assist them in their fight against HIV.
