On Tuesday, India and the United Kingdom conducted a virtual summit. It was attended by India Prime Minister Modi and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

At the virtual summit, both countries adopted a ‘Roadmap 2030’ plan to strengthen the relationship and cooperation between the two countries. The Roadmap will plan for more cooperation over the next ten years in important areas such as people to people contacts, trade and economy as well as defence.

They launched Enhanced Trade Partnership. The two countries plan to discuss signing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that will allow both countries to trade with each other under fewer restrictions.

India and the UK

The UK is India’s second-largest partner in research and innovation collaborations. At the virtual summit, they also announced a new India-UK ‘Global Innovation Partnership’.

The two countries also agreed to collaborate further on developing India’s development of combat aircraft.

Moreover, the two countries also signed eight agreements. This includes a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on a migration and mobility partnership. This will help in the easy movement of students and professionals from India to the UK.

The virtual summit was held after PM Johnson cancelled state visits to New Delhi twice because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two leaders discussed the COVID-19 situation. PM Modi also thanked Johnson for the quick medical assistance provided by the UK to India.
