India weather: Heavy rains affect Kerala and other states

Heavy rainfall continues to affect several parts of Kerala. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has put six districts on red alert. The Army and Air Force along with the NDRF are involved in rescue operations. PM Modi also had a meeting with the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to discuss the situation.

The IMD says that there will be rainfall in different parts of the country till 21 October.

Uttarakhand has halted the Char Dham Yatra temporarily due to heavy rains across the state. Many parts of Madhya Pradesh also received heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours. Moreover, officials have warned that due to heavy rain, fishermen in West Bengal and Odisha should not venture out to sea over the next few days.

Delhi is experiencing the wettest October since 1960.  On 17 October, the city recorded 87.9 mm of rainfall. This is the fourth-highest ever in a day, for Delhi. Even today, some parts of the city are receiving rainfall and it has caused waterlogging in many areas.

Apart from the rain, parts of Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir, and Uttarkhand have gotten fresh snowfall. They include Badrinath in Uttarkhand and Spiti in Himachal Pradesh. Officials have closed some highways in Himachal and warned the public not to drive on these roads.
