Indian Navy Captain Radhika Menon receives award for braveryWe recently read about the first-ever woman pilot of the Indian Navy.

Now let us read about another remarkable woman, Captain Radhika Menon, who has become an International Maritime Organization (IMO) Awardee.

She was nominated by the Indian government to receive the IMO Award for her exceptional bravery at sea.
 	They presented the medal and certificate of commendation at an awards ceremony at the IMO headquarters.
 	She is also India's first female Merchant Navy Captain.

What was Captain Menon's act of bravery?

She rescued seven fishermen from the fishing boat Durgamma in the Bay of Bengal.
 	The boat got lost at sea after an engine failure and loss of anchor in bad weather.
 	The fishermen did not have food and water and were surviving only on ice.
 	Fortunately, the Shipping Corporation of India Ltd spotted the boat 2.5 km away, off the coast of Gopalpur, Orissa.
 	Capt. Menon led the successful rescue operation, rescuing all 7 fishermen.

About this Award

This is an annual award established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
 	It is awarded to recognize people who risk their lives to save others.

Apart from Radhika Menon, Uttam Navik was also awarded for rescuing a helicopter CG 822 of the Indian Coast Guard Air Station Daman.
