Indian Railways to ban single-use plastics from 2nd October

Indian Railways to ban single-use plastics from 2nd OctoberThe Indian Railways has decided to take steps towards creating single-use plastics free railway stations.

The decision came after the Prime Minister’s speech on India's 73rd Independence Day.
 	During the speech, the PM has exhorted people to completely avoid single-use plastic from 2nd October, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
 	The ban will be strictly enforced on all railway stations across the country.
 	The Railway Board has issued a circular (announcement) to all regional offices regarding the decision.

The circular says that the officers in charge should ensure complete removal of single-use plastics from all railways stations, effective from 2nd October.
 	Officials will encourage all railway vendors to avoid plastics.
 	Railway Ministry has advised its employees to refuse, reduce and reuse plastic products.
 	The Ministry has ordered the IRCTC* to set up plastic bottle crushing machines at all major stations.
 	According to the plan, 1853 plastic water bottle crushing machines will be installed at 360 major stations.
