India’s Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), GC Murmu, has been selected as the external auditor of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

What is the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)?

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organisation that seeks to promote cooperation in the nuclear field and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Though established independently of the United Nations, the IAEA reports to both the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council.

Who is an external auditor?

An external auditor is an independent accountant who inspects the books of a company or other organisation. It can also mean someone who is hired or selected from outside to inspect an organisation.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said his tenure will be for six years, from 2022 to 2027. The MEA said the election is a “recognition” of India’s standing in the international community. It is also a global acknowledgement of the CAG and his credentials, professionalism and experience.

Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG)

GC Murmu assumed office as the CAG of India on August 8 last year. He was previously the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. And he is the 14th CAG of India. Moreover, Murmu is also the external auditor of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. This is an international organisation of national parliaments.

The CAG is responsible for auditing (checking) all receipts and expenditures of the Government of India and the State Governments. This also includes other organisations majorly financed by the Government.
