Inspirational Paralympian – Avani Lekhara

Indian Paralympic athletes are showing their best skills in Tokyo. So, today, let’s learn a little bit more about another inspirational Paralympian – Avani Lekhara.

Avani Lekhara is a young Indian para rifle shooter. She is currently ranked fifth in women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1.

When she was a teenager, Avani was seriously injured in a car accident. After her accident, her father encouraged her to take up a sport to keep herself busy. Initially, she tried both shooting and archery. Then. later, her interest deepened in shooting after reading Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra’s book A Shot at History. So, she seriously took up shooting in 2015 and she won a bronze medal in the National Championship.

Avani Lekhara made her international debut in shooting in 2017 for the World Cup held in UAE. Avani won her first silver medal in the IPC Para Shooting World Cup in 2017.

In 2019, this inspirational Paralympian was awarded the Most Promising  Paralympic Athlete by the GoSports Foundation of India.

Medal tally at Tokyo Paralympics

China is currently in the first position with 31 medals while the UK and Australia are in second and third place respectively. As for India, Bhavinaben Patel is set to play in the table tennis quarterfinals today. Moreover, Tek Chand will be playing in the shot put finals on the same day.
