International Day for the Eradication of Poverty!
Recommended for Important Days
On 17 October, the United Nations (UN) observes the International Day for Eradication of Poverty. ‘Poverty’ means being poor. The word ‘eradication‘ means completely removing something.
We all know that there are hundreds of millions of people around the world who are living in extreme poverty. So, this day aims to increase public awareness about the importance of removing poverty from the world.
Key facts!
- Poverty is not just about not having money, food or clothes.
- It also means having to work or live in dangerous places, not being able to take care of their health and having fewer human rights.
- This year, the theme for this day is “Dignity For All in Practice“.
- Dignity is a basic right in and of itself.
- The dignity of the human person serves as the foundation for each and every one of the other fundamental rights.
- There are still many individuals in the world who are denied their dignity.
- In addition, they are treated disrespectfully because they are living in continuous poverty.
- As per UN estimates there are still 1.3 billion people who live in multidimensional poverty.
- The difference in opportunities and incomes between the wealthy and the poor is widening.
- And the gap between the two groups continues to widen with each passing year.
