International Mountain Day – 11 December

International Mountain Day – 11 DecemberMountains support a large portion of the population around the world for their living. It also plays an important role in the water cycle. That is why it is important to protect mountains.

International Mountain Day (IMD) is celebrated on 11 December every year.

The day is celebrated to create awareness about mountains and to develop mountains.
 	Although IMD is being celebrated since 1992, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) officially declared it in 2002 and started celebrating it from 2003.
 	On this day, various activities including presentations, student debate, photo, art competitions, hikes and exhibitions will be organised.
 	The theme for this day is "Mountains matter for Youth". 
 	This year's theme focuses on the participation of youth in educating everyone that mountains provide fresh water, clean energy, food etc.

Mountains are under great threat due to climate change, land exploitation(ill-treatment) and natural disasters.
