International Travel Map – KyotoKyoto is one of the most beautiful and biggest cities in Japan. It was once it's capital many years ago.

Kyoto is a modern city with offices, transportation, malls and restaurants.
 	But at the same time, it is also a very traditional city. This means it is famous for many things that are preserved from its past. This includes traditional food, customs, dances and many UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Places to explore in Kyoto

Kyoto has many palaces, Buddhist temples, shrines and zen gardens. Zen gardens are created by arranging rocks, bushes, trees, sand etc, in a specific pattern.

Famous palaces include Nijo Castle, Kyoto Imperial Palace, Fushimi Castle, etc.

Temples and shrines you can visit are the famous Kinkaku-ji Temple (the Golden Pavilion), Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrine, To-ji Temple, and more.

Kyoto also has the beautiful Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and Ryoan-ji Zen garden.

Culture and traditions

Kyoto is considered the cultural capital of Japan. Here, you can see people wear beautiful kimonos (Japanese traditional dress).
 	Some of the best traditional food to try out are yudofu (a tofu dish), yatsuhashi (a sweet) and of course, the matcha or green tea.

Additionally, in 1997,  many countries signed the Kyoto Protocol to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and stop global warming.
