Today we are heading to Petra, Jordan, defined by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as the ‘most expensive traditional properties of man’s traditional heritage’.

The Petra Archaeological Park was put on the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1985. It was named one of the new seven wonders of the world in 2007.

Fun facts about Petra!

  • Petra is an ancient city located in the Jordanian region of Jordan between the Dead Sea and the Red Sea.
  • In the year 312 before the common era, it was established as the capital of an Arab country known as the Nabataean Kingdom.
  • Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, a Swiss explorer, was the one who made the rediscovery of Petra in 1812.
  • Petra is one of the most well-known historical sites in the world and draws tourists from all over the world.
  • The origin of the name “Petra” can be traced back to the Greek word “Petros,” which can be translated as “rocks.”
  • Petra is partially constructed and partially cut out of the rock, and it is encircled on all sides by mountains and tunnels.
  • Petra is reached through a winding canyon known as the Siq.
