Latest ISRO space launch includes 5 student-built satellites

Recommended for Middle Grades

On 28 February, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) had its first space launch in 2021.

It launched its PSLV-C51 rocket from the Sriharikota spaceport in Andhra Pradesh. The main satellite of the launch was Brazil’s Amazonia-1 satellite. They also launched 18 other satellites on the same rocket.

Amazonia-1 is an Earth observation satellite. Moreover, it is the first satellite to be fully designed, tested, and operated by Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research. It will keep a check on deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.

Other satellites in the ISRO space launch

Other satellites included five satellites built by students. One of them is the “Satish Dhawan Satellite” (SDSAT). Other satellites were “UNITYsat“, and the satellite “SindhuNetra“.

SDSAT is a nano (small) satellite which aims to study space weather. Chennai-based Space Kidz India built it.

UNITYsat is a combination of three satellites. Students at three different institutes of technology in India designed and built it. It will be used for radio services.

SindhuNetra was developed by students of Bengaluru-based PES University. It will identify suspicious ships.

PSLV-C51/Amazonia-1 is the first dedicated commercial (paid-for) mission of NewSpace India Limited (NSIL). NSIL is a Government of India company under the Department of Space.
