World Ozone Day!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

On 16 September, we celebrate World Ozone Day. It is also known as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. World Ozone day reminds us of the importance of the ozone layer and the need to protect it.

What is the ozone layer?

The ozone layer is a layer of ozone gas, covering the entire planet. It is located in the stratosphere (a layer of the atmosphere above the Earth’s surface).

The ozone layer protects the Earth by absorbing harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the Sun. These rays can cause skin cancer and other diseases and damage plants and ecosystems.

Key facts about World Ozone Day!

  • In the 1970s, scientists found that the ozone layer was depleting (getting thinner) and a hole developed.
  • Gases used in electronic items like refrigerators and air-conditioners caused the depletion.
  • So, in 1987, nations of the world signed the Montreal Protocol to protect the ozone layer.
  • Thanks to this agreement, the ozone layer is healing.
  • “Global Cooperation Protecting Life on Earth” is the theme for the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer in 2022.
  • This theme acknowledges the impact of the Montreal Protocol.
  • The Montreal Protocol is one of the most successful international environmental agreements to date.
  • It calls attention to the need to act together, make partnerships, and build global cooperation.
  • This is in order to deal with climate problems and protect life on Earth for future generations.

The exciting history of the Montreal Protocol is recounted by Sir David Attenborough.
