Runaway bear ‘Papillon’ from Italy runs away again

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Have you heard about the runaway bear yet? If not read on!

‘Papillon’ is a brown bear who lives in Italy. He has become famous for his amazing talent for being able to escape many times from the fenced area where he is kept.

Papillon’s official name is M49. He is 4 years old and weighs 149 kg. The nickname ‘Papillon’ has come from the title of a novel by a French prisoner name Henri Charrière, who escaped from prison.

Papillon, the runaway bear is part of a project by Italy to increase its population of brown bears in the region. They are being kept in a large forested area, which is surrounded by an electrified fence.

However, it seems Papillon really does not like to live there. Last year, he escaped for 10 months and spent his freedom raiding beehives and farms. He was recaptured only in April this year.

Last week, authorities found that he has escaped again! They are currently tracking this runaway bear.

Papillon’s daring escapes have made him very popular. Animal rights activists want Papillon to be set free and moved to a proper forest. He seems to really hate where he is living now.

Do you also believe that Papillon should be set free?

This is a nice news. I think that animals which don’t cause that much harm should be set free where they belong in their habitats.
