It’s election day

Four states and one union territory are having state legislative elections today – Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam, West Bengal and Puducherry (UT).

Over 20 crore people are on the voting list. For Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, this is the first and only phase of polling. It is Assam’s third and final, while Bengal has five more to go.

 

Election day

As of 5 pm today, around 60.5% of voters have voted in Kerala. In Puducherry, that is about 66.91%. In Bengal, about 68.4% of voters have cast their vote. Tamil Nadu reported the lowest turnout with just over 55%.

In Kerala, drones and around 60,000 police personnel were deployed to oversee voting.

In all the states, polling began at 7 am and will end at 6:30 pm. Strict COVID-19 rules are also in place. The voting has gone peacefully till now.

The results will be declared on 2 May 2021.
