James Dyson Award 2021 goes to student innovators

Recommended for Middle Grades

The James Dyson Award 2021 has gone to three winning inventions from university students in the field of engineering and science from across 28 countries.

What is the James Dyson Award?

The James Dyson Award is an international design award that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of design engineers. It is named after James Dyson, a British engineer and inventor.

The winners were selected from 250 inventions. Each winner receives £30,000 in prize money to support the next stages of their inventions.

What are the winning inventions of the James Dyson Award 2021?

One is a device called HOPES (which stands for Home eye Pressure E-skin Sensor). It is used for pain-free, at-home eye pressure testing. Three students, Kelu Yu, Si Li, and David Lee of the National University of Singapore created it.

Another is an invention called Plastic Scanner. This is a low-cost, handheld device that can tell the user that kind of plastic material an item is made from. It was created by Jerry de Vos from TU Delft (Delft University of Technology) in the Netherlands.

The third is a device called REACT. This is a device that can be used to stop bleeding and can help save the lives of people who have been stabbed by knives. Joseph Bentley from Loughborough University in England created it.

What kind of invention would you also like to create someday?
