The JEE-Main (Joint Entrance Examination-Main) started today with strict COVID-19 precautions in place at the exam centres. The exams are going ahead despite many students asking to postpone them.

Last week, the National Testing Agency (NTA) released guidelines for conducting the test. Students must wear face masks and gloves and carry their own bottles and sanitisers. Entry into the exam centres will be done in phases and seating will be done with social distancing. Temperature checks are also being conducted before entry.

Many students are worried about travel arrangements to get to the centres. Some state governments have reassured students that transportation will be provided.

The alumni (former students) of the Indian Institutes of Technology have also set up a website to connect volunteers with those who may need transport.

The JEE is scheduled to be held between 1 and 6 September. The National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) will be held on 13 September. The JEE is conducted for admission to engineering colleges across the country. NEET is an entrance exam for admission to medical colleges.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has upheld (agreed to) the UGC (University Grants Commission) order that all final year examinations (college and universities) in India should be completed by 30 September.

State governments are now planning how to conduct the examinations, keeping in mind rising COVID-19 cases as well as floods in many states.
