Jellyfish could replace other fishes on your seafood menu

Jellyfish as seafood

Do you enjoy eating seafood like fish or prawns? While they are very delicious, unfortunately, many fishes we eat are under threat.

Recently, a study has shown that almost 100 endangered species are being sold as seafood, and this is done legally. Not only that, due to incorrect labelling, people may not even know they are eating them.

So, scientists are suggesting that we could eat jellyfish instead of other endangered sea creatures.

While it sounds like a weird idea, in fact, many countries in Asia do eat jellyfish as part of their culture. In 2017, researchers in Denmark also made crispy chips out of jellyfish.

Many foods that we eat depend on culture and tradition. What sounds weird to you may sound delicious to someone else. So, even eating jellyfish could be just a matter of getting used to the idea.

Additionally, unlike many other species, jellyfish are also increasing a lot in number around the world (called jellyfish blooms). This means, even if we eat them, it does not threaten their numbers.

So, what does jellyfish taste like?

It doesn’t have much of a taste and is said to be chewy and mild. But with a yummy sauce, it is tasty!

Of course, only eating jellyfish will not help save endangered species from being eaten. Scientists say that there should be more strict rules on the labelling of seafood.
