J&K administration abolishes Legislative Council

J&K administration abolishes Legislative CouncilThe J&K administration has abolished the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Council (upper house of the Legislative Assembly) on 17 October.

This is as per Section 57 of the J&K Reorganisation Bill, 2019 which divided the state into the Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.

They have announced that all 116 staff members of the Council should report to the General Administration Department (GAD) by 22 October.
 	The administration has informed the Secretary of the Council to transfer all records of the Council Secretariat to the Department of Law, Justice Parliamentary Affairs.
 	Officials are also working to transfer various assets of the Legislative Council, like vehicles, furniture, gadgets, etc to different departments.

The Council's current 22 elected Members of Legislative Council (MLCs) have been informed that their tenure has ended.

The Council was known for being a vibrant platform to discuss various issues and it also passed many bills.
 	It was created in 1957 with a total strength was 36, out of which 22 were elected by the state Assembly.

Along with the above order, the government has also issued orders for the opening of the new administrative secretariat in Ladakh.

The Indian Parliament passed the J&K Reorganisation Bill 2019 in the first week of August 2019. J&K and Ladakh will be UTs (Union Territories) from 1 November 2019.
