A new President of the United States

On 20th January, Joe Biden (Joseph Robinette Biden Jr) was sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

Along with him, Kamala Harris became the Vice President – the first woman, the first black woman and first Asian-American to hold the position.

The ceremony

The ceremony was held on the steps of the US Capitol (congress building) in Washington D.C. Due to COVID-19, there were very few guests in person at the ceremony but the event was live-streamed online.

Attendees included former presidents Barrack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W Bush. Former President Donald Trump did not attend the event.

The US national anthem was performed by popstar Lady Gaga. There were also performances by singers Jennifer Lopez and Garth Brooks. The inaugural poem was performed by 22-year-old poet Amanda Gorman, who became the youngest known inaugural poet in history.

The traditional parade held after the event was also cancelled but a virtual one was held online.

A new President of the United States

Since becoming president, Biden has signed 17 new orders, reversing many of Trump’s policies, including removing the ban on travel from Muslim-majority countries.

The inauguration of a new US president has always been held on 20 January since 1937. This is due to a law given in the constitution. Before that, it used to be held on 4 March.
