Journalists Maria Ressa, Dmitry Muratov win 2021 Nobel Peace Prize

Journalists Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov have won the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

Maria Ressa is from the Philippines, and Dmitry Muratov is from Russia. They have won this year’s Peace Prize “for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression” as well as “for their courageous fight for freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia”.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said that the freedom of expression is under threat worldwide. Moreover, the committee said that Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov also represent all journalists who stand up for this ideal.

The 2021 Nobel Peace Prize laureates

Ressa founded investigative journalism website Rappler and is an outspoken critic of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Muratov founded the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta in 1993 and is its editor-in-chief. It is considered to be one of the very few independent newspapers in Russia today. They will receive the prize on 10 December 2021.

Last year’s winner of the Nobel Peace Prize was the UN World Food Programme.

This coming Monday, they will announce the prize for outstanding work in the field of economics.
