Kamala Harris is the U.S. Democratic’s Party’s candidate for Vice PresidentThe United States is gearing up for its presidential election on 3 November 2020. The two main parties in the election are the Democratic Party and the Republican Party.

The Democratic Party's candidate for President is former Vice President Joe Biden. Yesterday, he announced that Senator Kamala Harris will contest as his Vice President.

For the Republican Party, current President Donald Trump and his Vice President (VP) Mike Pence will be contesting.

Who is Senator Kamala Harris?

She is the first black woman and the first person of Asian descent to be nominated for national office (President or VP) by a major party.

She is currently a Democratic Party Senator in the US Senate (upper house of the US Congress). She had also contested in the primary elections for the Democratic Party's presidential candidate earlier this year. However, she dropped out after a while.

She is 55 years old and has a background in law. She was also the first woman and the first black person to serve as California's attorney general (AG). The AG is the top lawyer and law enforcement official in a state.

Senator Harris' father is of Jamaican descent while her mother was an Indian immigrant. She was primarily raised by her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, a cancer researcher and civil rights activist.

As the US is seeing a lot of racism issues come to the forefront, Senator Harris will be highly visible. Generally, the VP candidates in US presidential elections do not get much attention, but this year is an exception.
