King Gilgamesh’s dream tablet on display in an Iraqi museum

Who is King Gilgamesh?
Most experts on the subject of history agree that King Gilgamesh lived during the Mesopotamian civilization, the earliest known human civilization. He ruled somewhere between 2800 and 2500 BC.

What is his dream all about?
King Gilgamesh describes his dreams to his mother who understands his dream as the arrival of a new friend, who will become his life companion.

Which language is King Gilgamesh’s dream written in?
The Epic of Gilgamesh is written in the Akkadian language. People in ancient times used to write on clay.

How did the dream tablet end up in Iraq?
Scholars first discovered the tablet in the ruins of a library of a king in northern Iraq in 1853. Initially, it was sold to an antique dealer in London who shipped it to the United States. Thereafter, it was sold several times at auctions in various countries. In the end, it was returned to the Iraqi government by one of the museum owners.

UNESCO has appreciated the cooperation of the US and Iraq is recovering the valuable artifact. The countries are signatories to the UNESCO Convention of 1970.
