Krishna Janmashtami is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. He is believed to be an incarnation (avatar) of Lord Vishnu.

Hindus believe that Lord Krishna was born was to set the Earth free from evil. So, this festival symbolises that.

In the Hindu lunisolar calendar, Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated on Ashtami, which is the eighth day of the Shravana month. In our normal calendar, the Shravana month usually falls between July and September.

  • Krishna Janmashtami is also called Saatam Aatham, Gokulashtami, Sree Jayanti, and other names.
  • People in some places believe that Lord Krishna was born at midnight, so Janmashtami celebrations start at midnight.
  • During this festival, people meditate, fast, go to temples, and worship Lord Krishna.
  • Janmashtami is also widely celebrated in Mathura, Vrindavan, and Dwarka in Uttar Pradesh, as well as in Dwarka in Gujarat.
  • During this time, schools often put on cultural events.
  • Most of the time, people also do Krishna Lila. This is a folk drama that shows scenes from the life of Krishna.
