On 4 August 2020,  there was a huge explosion in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. It happened due to a huge amount of ammonium nitrate stored at its port. This explosion killed many people and injured thousands.

This tragic incident happened at a time when Lebanon is already facing protests, political, economic and COVID-19 issues.

A Lebanese artist named Hayat Nazer decided to use some of the debris ( Beirut explosion waste material) to create a statue.

Nazer spent weeks collecting twisted metal, broken glass from the streets. She also asked people to give her anything that was destroyed in the explosion to add to the statue.

When she finally had enough items from the Beirut explosion waste, she made the statue. The unnamed statue shows a woman with long flowing hair, raising the Lebanon flag. It also has a damaged clock stuck at 6:08, the moment of the explosion.

Nazer wanted to use her art to inspire people to unite and heal. This is not the first time she has created art to show her support for the people of Lebanon.

In 2019, she created a sculpture called "The Phoenix".  It was made from tents broken by counterprotesters during the country's political protests.

Unfortunately, much of her work has been destroyed by authorities who are against criticism of the government. However, she continues to create them.
