Lionel Messi, Alexia Putellas win 2021 Ballon d’Or football awardOn 30 November, Lionel Messi won the men’s Ballon d’Or award for a record seventh time. And Alexia Putellas won the women’s Ballon d’Or.

34-year-old Messi won the award after he led Argentina to the Copa America title in July this year. No one has won more Ballon d'Ors award. At the ceremony in Paris, he complimented Polish player Robert Lewandowski for his brilliant performance. Bayern Munich’s Lewandoski was also nominated and a big favourite but did not win.

Alexia Putellas is a 27-year-old Spanish midfielder who plays for Barcelona football club. This is her first Ballon d’Or award win. She won it after helping Barcelona win a historic treble and scored 26 goals in 42 games overall. In August this year, she was also named UEFA women’s player of the year.

The Ballon d’Or awards in 2020 were cancelled because the coronavirus pandemic had interrupted football leagues around the world.
Other winners
Robert Lewandowski won the striker of the year while Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma won the best goalkeeper award. The Kopa trophy for best young player went to Barcelona’s player Pedri. Moreover, Chelsea football club won the best club award.
