Madagascar celebrates 60th birthday by planting 1 million treesMadagascar is an island in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of East Africa. It is the oldest island in the world.

It is also home to a diverse range of animals and plants which are found nowhere else in the world. You may have read about some of them - the baobab tree (above) and the fossa.

Unfortunately, massive deforestation (cutting down of trees) is threatening the ecosystem. This affects animals as well as humans.

So, this year, on its 60th birthday, the government plans to make the country "green again" by planting 1 million trees!

Madagascar was under French rule since 1897 and got its independence in 1960. This year is its 60th anniversary of independence.
 	This year, they will plant 1 million saplings (young trees).
 	Not only that, but they are also preparing to plant 1 million trees for each year of its 60-year history.

The government hopes to preserve and protect the country's unique heritage and also help its people make a living.
