Magnitude 6.4 earthquake hits the Philippines

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck the Philippines on 16 October.

It hit some provinces and cities in the southern Philippines including Davao City, Mindanao island and Magsaysay town.

  • The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck 69 km north-northwest of the city of General Santos, Mindanao at 7:39 p.m. local time. The epicentre was about 80 km southwest of central Davao.
  • It damaged around 15 buildings, including shopping malls, schools and town halls.
  • Authorities say about 27 people were injured and 3 have died from earthquake-related injuries.
  • They have also warned the public to remain aware of aftershocks.

 

The Philippines, like Indonesia, is on the Pacific Ring of Fire and experiences frequent earthquakes.

  • The Pacific Ring of Fire (also known as the Rim of Fire or the Circum-Pacific belt) is a major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.
  • In a large 40,000 km horseshoe-shaped area which has 452 volcanoes (more than 75% of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes).
