What is Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)?
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is in charge of making sure that quality of goods meet a certain level of standard.
What is ISI Mark?
The ISI mark is an indication that a product fulfils certain standards.
The official authorities sent out notifications to concerned online resellers. The Toys (Quality Control) Order regulates and restrains the distribution of low-cost goods of poor quality.
The order was put into effect in January 2021.
Key facts!
- In March, more than eighteen thousand toys were seized from 25 retail establishments.
- The toys sold at the retail establishments did not have a Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) quality mark.
- The BIS officials claim to receive complaints about the selling of toys that do not comply with the BIS standard.
- According to the Bureau of Indian Standards, “Toys cannot be manufactured, sold, imported, or distributed without bearing the ISI Mark.”
- In addition, the ISI mark should be present on the majority of toys.
- This includes both electric and non-electric playthings like dolls and slides.
- According to BIS officials, the random quality checks were carried out at several shopping malls and major airports across the nation.
- Some of these standards concern safety concerns related to the physical and mechanical properties of toys.
- For example, flammability, the presence of toxic elements, and the presence of sharp edges.
