‘Miracle house’ escapes destruction in volcano eruption

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Last week, the Cumbre Vieja volcano eruption occurred on La Palma island. This is part of the Canary Islands of Spain. The volcano’s eruption on Sunday led to the shooting of lava hundreds of metres into the air. It burned forests and lava (hot, liquid rock) has destroyed many houses.

Amazingly, a single house on La Palma island has managed to escape the lava from the volcanic eruption. People are calling it the “miracle house” on social media.

The house is one of the few homes that have survived the volcano eruption. A retired couple from Denmark, Inge and Ranier Cocq own the “miracle house”. However, they haven’t seen their house since the pandemic started.

People are amazed to see the photos of the house standing there undamaged, while everything around it is destroyed.

The lava

Scientists said that the lava after the volcano eruption is advancing very slowly. Moreover, as it slowed, it has grown thicker. authorities say that, in some places, it rose up to 15 metres high. The lava has now swallowed up around 350 homes.
