We recently read about Kamala Harris becoming the first-ever female Vice-President of the United States. She is also the first black woman and person of Asian origin to hold the post. Harris has Indian heritage through her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, a scientist who was originally from Chennai.

As per a new report, Harris is one of more than 200 people of Indian origin occupying leadership positions in different countries.

They are in 15 countries across the globe. More than 60 of these leaders hold Cabinet positions. The list also includes diplomats, legislators, heads of central banks and senior civil servants.

The report is called the 2021 Indiaspora Government Leaders List. It was compiled by Indiaspora, a US-based organisation working among Indian expatriates.

Who is an expatriate?

An expatriate (or ex-pat) is an individual living and/or working in a country other than his or her country of citizenship, often temporarily and for work reasons. An ex-pat can also be an individual who has left their birth citizenship and take up the citizenship of another country.

As per India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Indians are the largest expatriates population in the world. There are about 32 million people of Indian-origin or (PIOs) globally.
