Nasal Sprays could protect from COVID-19!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

New tests in the lab have shown that a nasal spray that could protect people from all COVID variants will move on to human trials. Researchers at Northwestern University and the University of Washington say that the new spray could stop the virus from getting into the body.

Some treatments, like vaccines, have become less effective at fighting COVID as the virus has changed. This is because the virus has kept getting better. Some antibody treatments were also stopped because they didn’t work to protect people from omicron sub-variant

Nasal Sprays could offer protection against COVID-19!

As per research, a simple way to fight the virus is being moved to human clinical trials after promising results from tests on mice. Several research centres in England and Israel are testing nasal sprays as a way to protect against COVID-19.

Scientists used supercomputers to design material that could stick to places on the surface of the new coronavirus that was vulnerable. The initial clinical trials on mice eased COVID symptoms and even stopped the mice from getting infections.

They then looked at areas that allow the virus to grow. The nasal spray has elements called “mini binders”. The mini binders stick to three places on the virus’s infectious machinery at once. Researchers feel the deadly virus can’t get into the body unless it binds to an area that causes the virus to grow. Thus the treatment could work against new strains of the virus.

Future Possibilities!

If human studies exhibit a comparable level of efficacy, the researchers expect the nasal spray to be available in pharmacies in the near future.
