Bihar assembly elections: National Democratic Alliance wins

State legislative assembly elections were held in Bihar from 28 October to 7 November 2020. It was held in three phases. The results were announced on 10 November 2020.

The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 125 seats and will form the next government. The Bihar assembly has 243 seats. 122 seats are required for a party or coalition to form the government.

The NDA has two main parties in Bihar – the BJP and the Janata Dal United (JDU). BJP won 74 seats while the Janata Dal (United) or JD(U) party won 43 seats.

The opposition alliance Mahagathbandhan (MGB) won 110 seats. The MGB’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) party emerged as the single largest party with 75 seats. Its partners, the Congress party and Left parties won 19 and 16 seats respectively.

Current Bihar Chief Minister (CM) Nitish Kumar will head the new government. He will return as CM for a fourth term.

Apart from the Bihar assembly elections, recently, by-polls or by-elections for 59 assembly seats were also conducted. They were held in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Manipur. The BJP emerged as the big winner, winning about 40 of the 59 seats.

By-elections are elections held if a member of a state assembly or parliament could not complete his/her term due to death or disqualification. Then, elections are held to elect a new member.
