National Mathematics Day – 22 December

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Happy National Mathematics Day!

National Mathematics Day is celebrated on 22 December every year in India. The day is celebrated to raise awareness about mathematics.

The aim of the day is to generate a positive attitude towards learning mathematics among young people.

Why do we celebrate National Mathematics Day on 22 December?

  • This day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of the renowned Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. He was born on 22 December 1887.
  • This day was declared by former Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh in 2012, on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan in Chennai.
  • Additionally, 2012 was declared as National Mathematics Year.

How do we celebrate National Mathematics Day?

Generally, competitions and maths quizzes are conducted in schools, colleges, and universities. However, this year, due to COVID-19, all events are being held online.

In the year 2021, Neena Gupta received the prestigious Ramanujan Prize.
