Now, Nepal also plans to make the Mt. Everest region a plastic-free zone by 2020.

It will ban single-use plastics which include plastic bags, straws, soda, water bottles and most food packaging from 1st January 2020.

The executive council of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu district reached this decision on 21st August. Mt. Everest is located in Solukhumbu District.
 	They have not yet decided on a penalty for people who don't follow the rule.

The Everest region gets a large number of trekkers every year, which is a concern as it increases waste.

In 2014, the Nepal government introduced a rule where each member of a trekking expedition have to bring back at least 8 kg of collected garbage, in addition to the trash they generate themselves.

Additionally, in May 2018, the Nepal government also had a clean-up drive of the region, collecting nearly 11 tons of trash that had piled up for decades.

Apart from Nepal, recently, the San Francisco International Airport in the US has also banned plastic bottles inside the airport. It’s the first major airport in the US to issue such a policy.
