Night curfews imposed in cities as COVID-19 cases rise

India has set another record of daily COVID-19 cases with about 1.3 lakh infections in the last 24 hours. This is the fourth time in five days when India reported over one lakh new cases.

10 states, including Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi have shown a steep rise in cases.

As cases are rising, night curfews are being imposed in many cities. They include parts of Jammu and Kashmir (10 pm to 6 am) as well as cities in Karnataka (10 pm to 5 am) and Uttar Pradesh.

PM Modi held a meeting yesterday with the chief ministers of different states, to discuss the COVID-19 situation. He has called for all states and union territories to organise a “Tika Utsav” or vaccine festival from 11 to 14 April. During this “festival” they can vaccinate as many people as possible.

However, there seems to be a shortage of COVID-19 vaccine supplies. Vaccine centres in several states, including hardest-hit Maharashtra, have been shutting early as supplies finish.

As CBSE board exams start on 4 May, over 1 lakh students signed an online petition to cancel them. But CBSE has responded that exams will be held as scheduled.

Experts say new coronavirus variants and people’s carelessness about the anti-COVID rules is leading to the rise in cases. Election rallies, as well as crowded festivals and religious gatherings, are also adding to the COVID-19 cases.
