NSDC study shows low women entry into labour force over next 5 years

Recommended for Secondary Grades

Hello there, small wisdom gatherer!, buckle up for an epic story about the grown-up world of work, where we’re going to dive deep into a special group called the National Skills Development Corporation (NSDC).

Now, they have a detective team that just did some snooping around and guess what they found out? They discovered that in the next five years, only 1 out of every 5 new superheroes joining the workforce will be…ladies!

Workforce Imbalance

  • Hold on, we bet you’re wondering: “what are these numbers all about?” Well, let’s start with ages. We’re talking about girls who are between 15 and 30 years old. Out of a humongous 7 crore (that’s a 7 with seven zeroes, imagine that!) young people ready to start their jobs, nearly 5.9 crore will be aged between 15 and 30.
  • But here’s the interesting part of the study: only about 20% of these 5.9 crore will be women! Kinda looks like boys are hogging the spotlight, doesn’t it?
  • This makes us scratch our heads and think: why are fewer girls getting into the workforce? Our government thinks there are a lot of reasons like moving places, getting more education, and other things. Now, to put this into perspective, let’s take a peek at our neighbours.
  • In the study, if we look at a big scoreboard called World Bank data, we see that in 2019, countries like Vietnam, China, and Singapore had way more ladies working – at 73%, 61%, and 60% respectively. Kind of like if we had a class with 10 students and 7, 6, or even 6 of them were girls, unlike our case with just 2 out of 10.
  • Our own country’s big survey office, the NSSO, says that in 2017-18, out of everyone aged 15 or more, only 23.3% of the ladies had jobs. And globally, it seems like there are fewer and fewer women in the workforce as years go by.
  • Now, what can we learn from this? Well, there seems to be a bit of a seesaw here, doesn’t there? A bit more boys working than girls. But hey, isn’t it fun when we all get to play together? It’s the same with work too. We could probably do a lot better if everyone got an equal chance.
  • So, let’s remember this lesson: no matter if you’re a boy or a girl, when you grow up, you can be whatever you want to be and help make our country an even better place!
