Here is a round-up of the latest political news in India and the world.

State legislative assembly elections in Bihar

Bihar is set to have assembly elections from 28 October to 7 November 2020. It will be held in three phases. The results will be announced on 10 November 2020.

The Bihar Legislative Assembly has 243 seats. 122 seats are needed for a majority. Elections are held once every five years.

The main alliances in this election are the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the Mahagathbandhan (MGB). NDA comprises of BJP, Janata Dal (United) or JD(U), and more. MGB has Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Congress and other parties.  There are also other smaller parties contesting the election.

Kashmir update

In other political news, Jammu and Kashmir authorities have closed the office of the Kashmir Times in Srinagar. The Kashmir Times is one of the region’s oldest and most prominent (important) English-language newspapers. The move has been severely criticised in the media.

Farm bills

The centre passed three controversial farm bills a while ago. This was highly protested against, by farmers and the opposition parties. In response to this, Punjab’s state assembly has passed three farm bills which aim to protect farmers.

US presidential election

For political news across the world, the race is heating up as the election will be conducted on 3 November 2020. The first debate between the two main candidates, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, was held on 29 September. During such debates, candidates give their views on important issues.

The second scheduled debate was cancelled due to COVID-19 fears. The third and final debate is scheduled for 22 October.

China

A Chinese soldier who had strayed over the Indian side of the border in Ladakh was handed back over to China.
