Popeye has a long and rich history spanning nearly a century and is one of the most recognizable and beloved cartoon characters in the world, consistently regarded as one of the best ever created.

Fun facts about Popeye!
- Elzie Crisler Segar made up the character Popeye the Sailor for a cartoon.
- On January 17, 1929, he first showed up in the US daily comic strip “Thimble Theatre” with his girlfriend Olive Oyl and his enemy Pluto.
- Because of the spinach, Popeye was the first cartoon character to get his own statue.
- He is the main character in a lot of comics and animated cartoons.
- He is best known for his right eye that squints or is completely missing, his big forearms with two anchor tattoos, his skinny upper arms, and his corncob pipe.
- As per the original comics, Popeye is super-humanly strong and can lift huge objects, while in later adaptations he is not quite as mighty until he gains a boost in strength by eating spinach.
- Popeye’s creator, E. C. Segar, characterized him as violent and uncivilized yet introspective and with high moral fibre.
- One of his more popular sayings “I yam what I yam an’ tha’s all I yam” (I am what I am and that’s all I am)
