Recommended for Middle Grades

On 22 November, President Ram Nath Kovind honoured the brave soldiers of the country at the Gallantry Awards and Distinguished Service Decorations at the Defence Investiture Ceremony. The ceremony was held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi.

What are the Gallantry Awards of India?

The government of India presents the Gallantry Awards to honour the acts of bravery and sacrifice of the officers/personnel (soldiers) of the Armed Forces.

Group Captain Abhinandan Varthaman of the Indian Air Force was awarded the Vir Chakra for his role in pushing back Pakistan’s fighter jets in February 2019.

President Kovind awarded the Kirti Chakra (posthumously) to Sapper Prakash Jadhav for fighting terrorists in an operation in Jammu and Kashmir. His wife and mother received the award. “Posthumously” means the person has already passed away.

Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal and Naib Subedar Sombir were also awarded the Shaurya Chakra (posthumously). Their wives and mothers received the awards.

Overall, the President presented one Kirti Chakras, one Vir Chakra and 23 Shaurya Chakras to various soldiers at the ceremony.

Gallantry Awards

The government announces the Gallantry Awards twice a year – on Republic Day and then on Independence Day. The awards are divided into different categories. They are the Param Vir Chakra (the highest), the Ashoka Chakra, the Mahavir Chakra, the Kirti Chakra, the Vir Chakra and the Shaurya Chakra.
