Rajya Sabha passes CAB, protests in Assam and other statesRecently, we read about the Citizenship Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha.

On 11 December, the Rajya Sabha also passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) 2019.

After a 9-hour debate, 125 members of the parliament voted for it, while 99 voted against it.
 	The bill has been extremely controversial and many political and social leaders have expressed concerns regarding it.

Protests in Assam and other parts of the country against the CAB

Dubbed as ‘unconstitutional‘ and controversial, this bill saw bans, protests and incidents of violence happening in the northeastern states and some other parts of the country.
 	Thousands of people stood against the curfew in Guwahati (Assam) and opposed CAB.
 	The army has been sent into the state of Tripura and thousands of troops have been deployed to Assam.
 	Mobile internet services have been suspended in some districts in Assam.
 	Transport services like trains and flights have been cancelled for the next couple of days.
 	Protesters are seen holding placards that read 'No CAB' and shouting slogans against the Bill.
 	The protesters also burnt a few vehicles and created a heavy blockade.

People fear that CAB will increase the number of people who speak Bengali and dominate the people in Assam and destroy their culture.
