Rare Australian bee rediscovered after nearly 100 years

A very rare bee

Did you know that bees are disappearing? Yes, the tiny creatures that make delicious honey are disappearing due to global warming and the loss of forests.

In a piece of good news, an extremely rare type of bee was re-discovered in Australia recently.  This bee had last been seen in 1923 almost 100 years ago!

This “masked” bee is called Pharohylaeus lactiferus. Till now, only 6 bees of this type had been seen.

The bee was rediscovered accidentally by a man named James Dorey. After he found it, he spent more time looking around the area for more of such bees and found more.

Scientists are now working to find out exactly how many of the bees are there and where they live.

Sadly, the bees need to be saved quickly. They are in danger of actually dying out due to wildfires and cutting down forests.
