Rare, yellow penguin photographed for the first time ever

Recommended for Foundational Grades

We all know about the penguin bird. These cute-looking birds are usually black and white in colour, cannot fly and are mostly found in Antarctica. One type of penguin is the king penguin.

What are king penguins?

King penguins are the second-largest type of penguins. They are known for their black-and-white coat with a yellowish-gold dash of colour on their collar.

But a king penguin living in South Georgia, Antarctica,  is a little different from them. It has only yellow feathers where the black feathers should be! The penguin has a white beak, a cream-coloured body, and yellow-coloured feathers.

This rare penguin was photographed by Belgian photographer Yves Adams in 2019. He released the photo only recently.

Why is this penguin yellow in colour?

Experts say that the yellow colour is because of a rare condition called leucism. This causes a partial loss of colour which result in white skin, feathers or hair. It is the same reason why one giraffe in the world is also white in colour.
