First-ever female President of Tanzania

Tanzania is a country in East Africa. On 17 March 2021, its President, John Magufuli, passed away due to heart problems. He was infamous for denying the existence of COVID-19 and refusing to impose restrictions for a long time.

His passing means that the Vice President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has become Tanzania’s 6th President. She was officially sworn in today. This makes her the first-ever female President in the history of the country.

Moreover, Hassan has also become the only current female political head of government among the countries of Africa. Ethiopia also has a female president but the role is mostly only in name – similar to the role played by the President in India.

61-year-old Hassan is affectionately known as Mama Samia in Tanzania. She became Tanzania’s first female Vice-President in 2015 and was re-elected in 2020 (along with Magufuli). Tanzania has a presidential system of government.

What is a presidential system of government?

In this system, the President is both the head of state and government (for example, the United States).

The country of Tanzania

Tanzania was under British colonial rule (as “Tanganyika”) till 1961. Then, in 1964, it merged with Zanzibar to become the United Republic of Tanzania.
