Scotland is a country that is part of the United Kingdom (UK). The UK consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

  • Scotland was a separate country until 1707 when it became part of the UK. It has its own parliament which has limited powers.
  • The name ‘Scotland’ comes from Scoti, the Latin name for the Gaels. The Gaels are a group of people, native to Scotland, who speak the Gaelic language.
  • It’s capital is Edinburgh. Apart from Edinburgh, Scotland has many other cities, like Glasgow, which have rich histories and heritage dating back thousands of years.

  • It is rich in culture and is famous for its castles, traditional attire called ‘kilt’, whiskey and the bagpipe musical instrument, among others.
  • Scottish people speak Scottish Gaelic and English. However, their English accent can be difficult to understand initially.
